this is my first blogging experience. I finished Going to the Sun yesterday, Sunday, and I was very disappointed. Perhaps its because of my ignorance of Becket. I thought the minimalist idea was very simple writing, not nothing much happens and then you die--or you don't die! I did learn a lot about diabetes that I did not know and could relate to because one of my best friends is about to donate a kidney to her sister who has all the problems that Penny anticipated, she's blind in one eye, has foot problems, basically can't feel her feet and is losing kidney function fast, hence the transplant. All this despite being a nurse and trying to take very good care of her disease.
What did you think of the man writing from woman's point of view?
Mary, I can't find this one on tape...bummer! But, from what you said, I think I might like it! I did get through The Road and it is definitely minimalist - so I'll try and get to it before our meeting. I also have a student who just this week was diagnosed with diabetes - so I could use learning about that! Can't wait to see you all and thanks for creating this blog. It's very nice. Now if only I could learn to "text"!
ReplyDeleteHi Connie ~ I just finished the first part yesterday, and I think your question was dead-on. When I was reading about how Penny pursued Saint, I was thinking, Wow! Can you DO that? Do guys like that? I was impressed with her boldness. It's been my experience that men don't like that. They like to lead. Only a woman would know this. I think it reveals a carelessness on the writer's part to so flagrantly give Penny a male perspective. She also calls him pretty quite frequently.
ReplyDeleteYes, I also started it yesterday and was captivated by the focus on diabetes--My husband is a juvenile diabetic so I am waiting to see how this unfolds. Is the author diabetic?
